She is a successful author, a loving wife and the worlds best mom. Her doctor husband dotes on her, her teenage daughter idolizes her and her readers yearn for her writing. Shouldn’t all that respect and love make her happy?

Yet, she is devoid of inner peace. In the wee hours of the night, her slumber is disturbed by horrifying nightmares. All her harmony is abducted and lost amidst the bunch of hidden letters kept in her cupboard. Those letters were written long back by her cousin, presently a patient at a mental asylum in kolkata.

Haunted by her inner demons and tired by the long-time secrecy, she decides to put end to her misery by surrendering to her husband and daughter, The hidden letters. Will she lose her husbands love and daughters respect? Can she forgive herself for her own selfishness which rendered her cousins fate malignant?

  • My View

Purba actually does wonders with her story-telling skills. I was lost in the world of the protagonists for almost the entire day, that much was the impact made by the book on me. A very remarkably crafted characters. And how beautifully the prologue and the epilogues have been written! Very true and touching.

The way the characters tends to think about why the other person feels and does something should actually be emulated by us. There is a chapter in the book titled ‘WINDS OF CHANGE’, which actually brought a very drastic change in my perspective in understanding the feelings portrayed by other people. The chapters, WINDS OF CHANGE and AN OBJECT OF SHOCK is for me the MOST important part of this story and I strongly felt for the incidents depicted in those chapters.

There is not a single character which is weak. And what really grabbed my heart were the protagonist’s beautiful and pure love for her husband and this actually amplifies the implausibility of the story. The book actually fulfills what it sets out to do. The Hidden Letters will surely sneak into your heart. The emotions would’ve fallen flat had the writing been sub-standard or the execution of the material been humdrum but nothing of that sort happened in this book, thanks to the author’s superb yet simple writing skill.

And I cannot desist from telling this that Purba is another SUDHA MURTHY in making

My rating: 4.5/5
